We love hiking and trekking and thought you might too and have rated a few tracks and mountains in Mauritius for both hiking and trekking enthusiasts.

Hiking

Mauritius is an incredibly diverse place. Besides its pristine lagoons and amazing hotels, it also boasts an exotic wildlife that you can get closer to through hiking and trekking.

Hiking in The Black River Gorges National Park is an ideal start. The Black River Gorges National Park is home to a number of indigenous plant and animal species. Kestrels and pink pigeons can be spotted at times in the towering trees. The refreshing green canopy and the relaxing sound of streams create the perfect atmosphere for very pleasant walks. The trail leads to the summit of Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire. Other popular but tougher hiking paths are at Tamarind Falls and La Nicolière Reserve. They all provide a lush green setting with stunning views but the heat can be very exhausting.

Hiking’ or Trekking’?

Very often, hiking and trekking seem to convey the same meaning here.

Trekking in the mountains in Mauritius is a rich experience as you explore the island from the peaks. The Macchabée trail is the favourite of many with its highest point being around 650 metres offering breathtaking views with surrounding volcanic features and the turquoise-blue ocean.

Hiking Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO heritage site, is challenging. The climb becomes steeper as you reach the peak and can be daunting even for the experienced climber. On reaching the peak, you can only marvel at the dazzling scenery with the deep-blue waters and the bays fringed by lush vegetation.

You will definitely enjoy hiking Le Pouce Mountain, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (the highest peak in Mauritius), Lion Mountain and Les Trois Mamelles. Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire offers the best views of the west coast of the island.
